Created in 1902 by Richard Outcault for his comic piece Buster Brown, Mary Janes was the sister of the title character Buster. Two years later when Richard journeyed to the St Louis worlds Fair and traded many licenses to companies to use the characters in his comic piece to advertise, his cordial relations with Brown shoe company was triggered.

After a series of theater performances the company gained prominence and has always been associated with the Buster Brown characters, and a shoe trend worn by Buster’s sister (Mary Jane) is commemorated by her name till now. So, Mary Jane is an American term in earlier times branded for a type of saddle or shoe that classically has low heels, wide and curved- closed toes and a solo- buckle strap athwart the instep and about the ankle. Conventionally the Mary Janes was made of black patent leather but the latest trends are coming in wide range of colors.
